Under the guidance and direction of the site foreman and or direct supervisor, the Ballast Regulator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in an efficient, safe and appropriate manner. The Ballast Regulator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by policies and procedures


  • Operating Ballast Regulator
  • Working with Surface Track Machine crews on rail maintenance & ballast cleaning
  • Abide by safety procedures, conducting pre-start checks on machinery & safe operations
  • General track machine maintenance
  • Ensuring safety is a priority to self, fellow workers, the general public and the assets of the company and following policies and procedures set out by the company
  • Daily walk around inspection if machine, general housekeeping of machine and minor repairs to machine when necessary to ensure safe operation
  • Daily administration of log books, job briefings etc. mandated by law ensuring compliance with governed regulations of transportation such as DOT logs when applicable
  • Compliance to track rules and instructions according to CROR
  • Assist with manual labour when necessary
  • Communicate effectively over radio following CTC standards
  • Meet productivity level requirements set out by supervisors/foremen
  • Other duties as assigned


The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

  • Ability to read instructions, follow technical specifications and grade plans
  • Ability to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting, standing, bending, shovelling, etc
  • Sound understanding of safety regulations, safe work practices and work procedures and be capable of assisting in maintaining safe work sites
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Perform duties in inclement weather, with possible exposure to severe weather conditions
  • Proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of various related equipment and tools
  • Ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness in a variety of situations
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage


  • A high school diploma is considered an asset
  • at least 2 years full time work experience as a Ballast Regulator on the track
  • Experience in track construction & maintenance
  • Previous machine operator experience required
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • CROR required (will train)
  • Basic mechanical aptitude required
  • Clear criminal record preferred
  • Clean drivers abstract preferred
  • First Aid, Fall Arrest, GEI, Forklift Loader, Specific Machine Operator Certification will be as as-set, will train.
